This weeks video was quite the doosy. The doosies were a product of me thinking that things would be easier than they really would be. And the idea was pretty basic, which was to make a video about running, made up of only clips that Ive gotten over the years. No biggy right? Wrong.
It was a biggy, and a doosy.
Years worth of clips from some my favorite days held a weight that made it pretty difficult to make any progress with. I didn't want to let these clips down but i also had to just make it. And for some reason i thought this would be just a fun little editing project with minimal work that i could do over the weekend after my knee surgery. Funny enough i ended up not doing it that weekend. Knee surgery's no joke. So i gave myself a late pass. Id skip a week and make it good.
But a couple days into this new week and i still didn't feel that great. And i didn't really know what id say about a video about running. I was a little stuck. Maybe it needed to be about why i like to run. Which when i thought about it was really just because i liked where it took me. How i liked the adventures it opened up to me.
When i told Sadie about it she liked it but pointed out how the assumed meaning of adventure didn’t quite line up with how i see it and other people see it. And… it took me about half a day but i realized it was about exploring more than anything. A video on exploring. Great.
First step was gathering all the clips of exploring. Which meant looking through all the videos in my camera roll. Definitely missed some but ended up getting about 650 videos that had the context of some sort of exploration. A fun but kind of sad process when you cant walk and you miss your buddies.
But we ball.
Second step was figuring out what i was going to say. Which was also harder than expected. What would I say about exploring. What could i add that would be cool or interesting or new? This step took the longest.
It took a while to realize that while my adventures may not be as elaborate and grandiose as i want them to be yet, they still have a good deal of sweetness in them. And they do feel really special when i go on them. And that if anybody saw them and wanted to do it id give them the basics. Which is what the pointers i give are. Basic. And also not very strict.
What i wrote didn't really live up to how beautiful the clips were to me but i needed to say something.
Third step now was putting it all together. Also tricky. What clip goes where, and how does it flow, and why did i say that in that way and god and etc. I wanted to have the video have a backing track of the footsteps synced with some digital precision noises on my PO-33. Didn't end up having the time or patience but i still want to do it so maybe one day i make a remastered version. for now its a field recording of some cicadas T and I did on a camping trip. Lot of T… which was funny and sweet. And…
So.
here it is.
to many more adventures:
(im just getting started, years are recent years)
