This was an idea I had around the time I made the video about my favorite objects. Most of the 3D scans that I was doing were made using pictures from my phone. And I thought that they all kind of had this cold digital iPhone camera look, so I was curious what a 3D model would look like if I used film scans to scan an object… or a place even. Would it have the same charm that film tends to have? The warmness? The grain? Well, thats what the videos about. And if I’m spending money to buy and develop the film, I might as well do it about places that mean something to me. And I might as well show you too:
Models:
These are the 3D models (Analog and digital). They all come with a field recording of the place so if you want to explore them, listen to the recordings while you do it.
Grotto:
One of my favorite hikes in LA. Most fun to do with friends and rain boots. Full of bugs and life.
Tristan came with me when i went to shoot it. And I had been given some clothes to shoot for golf. If they liked any of the images they would pay me for it. And… they liked two of them:
These pictures paid for most of the project. Thank you golf.

It was a little dark by the time we got there so a lot of the photos are taken at 1/60 or below… so…
405 Oak:
When I went up there to shoot it this lady was putting flowers on the tree. She was nice. She was curious about what i was doing. When i told she said her husbands also a photographer who shot her with the tree awhile ago. She told me about a 3D club in LA. They were having a meeting i couldn't make it to but i told Nico about it (he was the one who sold me the slide film that i shot the tree with). He said that a couple he photographed used to be the presidents of it. The full story is: really cool. Small world
Her shooting me shooting the tree and the extra flowers she left on my car. Made it so much more special to not do it alone.
When I went up there next time months later to film it was the first day of the fires in LA. The palisades was burning just over the hill. I thought that I should film it soon just in case. Even though it was far and over the 405.
I’ve never felt the wind in the context of it being something so indirectly devastating.
How close the fire got to the tree.

Photogrametry:
My best attempt at a model with photogrametry. It didnt like it. Which is why i went with lidar/Analog Analog Model
LiDAR:
(download to see the lidar version i showed)
ANALOG ANALOG 405 OAK:
I made this sculpture of the oak to play with the idea of how physical some of these “models” could get. I went to the river three days in a row because I thought every one of those days would be the last day I would work on it and film it. Montserrat helped me build it, Ed kept me company, and Tristan came to come see it (and secure it in a new spot).
MOCA:
I shot MOCA with black and white film with Quinn. Cool that it still works in B&W. Couldn't use a tripod but could still film all I wanted. Used a water bottle for all the shots in the video. Also wore the same shirt I wore there years ago.

Bonaventure:
Maybe the worst AP model, but maybe the best LiDAR one. Used to go a lot in high school. Took a girl to dinner for the first time on top at the restaurant that spins. Wasn't very good. They only sell drinks there now.
